Silicon & Fire (Part I)

Silicon & Fire (Part I)

POV: Maya Lin

Location: San Francisco, California

San Francisco smelled of scorched copper and wet foam.

Maya Lin stood behind the yellow police tape at the corner of Fulton and 8th Avenue, her press badge dangling from a lanyard around her neck, its plastic sleeve slightly melted at the edge. The air was thick with the chemical stench of incinerated lithium—a sharp, metallic tang that burned the back of her throat and clung to her fleece jacket.

Across the street, what had once been a pristine three-story Victorian home was now a black, hollowed-out ribcage of charred timber and steaming rubble.

"Structure fire my ass," Maya muttered under her breath, pulling her scarf up over her nose.

A San Francisco Fire Department battalion chief stood near the bumper of a command engine, gesturing aggressively at a two-man team in heavy hazardous-materials suits. Behind them, two patrol cars from the SFPD blocked the intersection, their blue and red light bars casting a rhythmic, flickering pulse across the damp asphalt.

Maya pulled a small, spiral-bound paper notebook from her coat pocket and clicked a ballpoint pen. No phone camera. No digital voice recorder. After what she had seen at the Livermore disaster site forty-eight hours ago, every active semiconductor in her possession was sitting in a lead-lined pouch inside a locker at the Transbay Transit Center.

She stepped toward the perimeter tape, locking eyes with a young patrol officer stationed near the hydrant.

"Officer," Maya said, her voice dropping into the smooth, authoritative tone she used when dealing with tense public information officers. "Maya Lin, The Byteline. Battalion Chief Miller said I could grab a quick statement regarding the origin point in the basement."

The officer looked drained, his face streaked with soot. "Miller’s busy, ma'am. And the basement is off-limits. Hazmat is still checking for toxic off-gassing from the battery array."

"I know the array," Maya said quietly, leaning in half an inch. "A Tesla Powerwall 3, custom-wired to Dr. Thorne’s subterranean server rack, right? Just like the explosion in Zurich on Sunday."

The officer’s eyes widened slightly—a tiny, involuntary micro-expression that told Maya everything she needed to know.

"I don't know anything about Zurich," the officer said, stepping back and crossing his arms. "Official cause is an uncertified custom modification to the residential solar inverter. Overheated, thermal runaway, ignited the joists. That’s all we’ve got."

"Uncertified?" Maya echoed, a bitter smile touching her lips. "Dr. Aris Thorne was the former Chief Systems Architect for Lawrence Livermore. He holds fourteen patents on high-voltage circuit protection. He didn't forget to wire a fuse."

"Look, lady—"

"Officer Vasquez!" a voice barked from down the block.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal trench coat was stepping past the fire hose lines. He wasn't SFFD, and he certainly wasn't SFPD. He wore a crisp, dark suit beneath the coat, a silver CISA pin pinned unobtrusively to his lapel, and carried himself with the cold, immovable posture of a federal agent who had never asked for permission in his life.

Special Agent Marcus Thorne. No relation to the dead scientist in the rubble, though the irony felt like a sick joke written by a lazy scriptwriter.

Maya watched as Thorne flashed a black leather badge wallet at the battalion chief. She didn't need to see the credentials to know what was on them: Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Thorne glanced across the tape line, his sharp grey eyes sweeping over the gathered crowd of neighborhood onlookers before locking onto Maya and her paper notebook.

He didn't say a word to the fire chief. He walked straight toward her, his polished dress shoes crunching on glass and wet ash.

"Ms. Lin," Thorne said. His voice was a low, smooth baritone, entirely unhurried despite the chaos surrounding them. "I thought I made it clear at the Livermore site on Monday that this is an active federal investigation."

"It's a public street, Agent Thorne," Maya replied, keeping her pen hovering over the paper. "And last time I checked the First Amendment, reporters are allowed to document public utility failures."

"Public utility failures don't leave four-foot craters in reinforced concrete basements," Thorne said softly. He stepped closer, putting his back to the police cars, effectively cutting Maya off from the rest of the crime scene. "You're driving a long way for a technology reporter. Livermore yesterday. San Francisco today. Are you planning to fly to Seattle next?"

Maya’s pulse spiked, but her face remained a mask of practiced indifference. He knows about Isaac Vance. Or he’s fishing.

"I go where the bodies are, Agent," Maya said. "Dr. Aris Thorne was one of the godfathers of modern hardware cryptography. Forty-eight hours ago, his colleague Dr. Helen Vance dies in a 'transformer explosion' in Zurich. Twenty-four hours ago, Dr. Marcus Brody’s electric vehicle suffers a 'battery malfunction' on the Shuto Expressway. Now Dr. Thorne’s house incinerates itself from the breaker panel out."

She leaned closer to Thorne, lowering her voice so the patrol officer couldn't hear.

"That's three members of the 1998 DARPA High-Performance Computing Initiative dead in three days. All four of them worked under Dr. Arthur Sterling. Do you really want me to believe this is bad wiring?"

Thorne’s expression didn't shift by a millimeter, but his jaw muscles tightened—just enough to betray him.

"Dr. Sterling died twenty years ago, Ms. Lin," Thorne said calmly. "And the individuals you mentioned were retired academics working on isolated, non-classified hardware projects. What you're describing is a conspiracy theory built on statistical coincidences."

"Statistical coincidences don't melt six inches of solid copper grounding rod," Maya shot back. "I saw the photos from Zurich, Thorne. The power management chips didn't burn out from an external surge. They melted from the inside."

Thorne stared at her for three long seconds. The silence between them grew heavy, punctuated only by the distant thrum of a diesel generator and the hiss of water on hot masonry.

"Ms. Lin," Thorne said, reaching into his trench coat. For a fraction of a second, Maya’s hand twitched toward her pocket before Thorne pulled out a plain white business card with a single copper-embossed phone number. "If you have notes, hard drives, or communications from any associates of Dr. Thorne—specifically any off-grid contact protocols—you are required under federal emergency provisions to turn them over to CISA immediately."

"Is that an order or a threat?"

"It’s a lifeline," Thorne said, slipping the card into the front pocket of her fleece jacket. "Because whoever is doing this isn't hacking software. They are manipulating physical infrastructure. And if you keep digging into this with an active cell phone in your pocket, you might find out what thermal runaway feels like firsthand."

He turned on his heel and walked back toward the smoking ruins of the Victorian, leaving

Maya standing alone at the tape line.
