POV: Dr. Isaac Vance

Location: The Vault — Concrete, Washington

The name belonged to Dr. Arthur Sterling.

In the late 1990s, Sterling had been the undisputed titan of distributed computing—a man who had predicted the rise of global cloud networks before the public even understood what the internet was. He had been Isaac’s mentor at MIT, a brilliant, terrifyingly focused professor who viewed software as a temporary crutch and physical hardware as the ultimate truth of the universe.

“Software is just an opinion,” Sterling used to tell his graduate students, slamming his fist onto a lab bench covered in silicon wafers. “Hardware is physics. And physics doesn't care about your password.”

In 2004, Sterling had abruptly resigned his tenured chair, liquidated his estate, and vanished into the high desert of Eastern Oregon. Three months later, a small obituary appeared in the back pages of the Seattle Times: death by sudden cardiac arrest, body cremated, no services requested.

Isaac had attended the memorial—a bleak gathering of four people in an empty funeral home.

He looked back down at the oscilloscope.

The signal wasn't coming from an internet connection. It wasn't coming from a satellite beam penetrating forty feet of earth and a copper Faraday cage.

It was coming through the water pipe.

The subterranean aquifer feeding Isaac’s facility ran through miles of deep granite fissures, passing near several old industrial sites and long-forgotten military installations in the Cascade foothills. Someone—or something—was injecting high-frequency acoustic pulses directly into the water table miles away.

The vibrations were traveling through the water, hitting the copper pipes in Isaac’s bunker, and causing the physical copper chassis of Server Stack 04 to micro-vibrate.

The PDM-902 chip wasn't receiving data through a wire. The chip’s internal quartz crystal oscillator—the tiny clock that kept time for its internal circuits—was acting as a piezoelectric receiver. The acoustic vibrations hitting the chip were flexing the quartz crystal, generating microscopic voltage spikes that the chip's internal power registers were reading as valid binary instructions.

It was an air-gap jump executed through pure physical resonance. A side-channel attack using the Earth itself as the conductor.

Isaac stood up, his knee joints popping in the quiet room. His mind raced through the implications. To execute a payload like this required two things: an absolute, terrifying mastery of physical-layer mechanics, and a targeted destination key.

The signal wasn't a scattershot broadcast. It was tuned specifically to the resonant frequency of the copper alloys used in his facility.

The speaker on the bench clicked again. The rhythm shifted, accelerating into a dense, continuous whine that sounded like a swarm of brass hornets trapped inside a glass jar.

The green line on the oscilloscope collapsed into a complex, dense waveform—a cryptographic handshake.

Isaac reached for the frequency dial on the scope, turning it slowly to track the upper harmonics.

The signal was delivering an encrypted payload directly into the volatile memory of the PDM-902 chip. The chip’s heat output was rising sharply now—315 Kelvin, 320 Kelvin. The internal power rails were being pushed to their absolute physical limits as the tiny slice of silicon processed the incoming data stream.

Isaac grabbed a pair of insulated electrician’s pliers, reached into the server chassis, and clamped them onto the PDM-902 chip’s primary power pin.

With a firm, deliberate twist, he ripped the chip directly off the motherboard, tearing four copper traces from the fiberglass board.

The high-pitched whine from the speaker instantly cut out.

Silence slammed back into the bunker, heavy and suffocating.

Isaac held the tiny, mangled piece of black plastic in his pliers. It was hot enough to scorch the insulation on the tool's handles. A faint wispy trail of grey smoke drifted up from the torn motherboard socket, carrying the acrid stench of burned epoxy and fried silicon.

He dropped the dead chip into an aluminum ash tray on his desk.

His hands were steady, but his mind was spinning. The PDM-902 was destroyed, but the acoustic signal in the water pipe was still pulsing—a blind, relentless hum vibrating through the steel plumbing of his home.

He turned toward the heavy steel blast door that led to his living quarters.

Mounted on the wall beside the door was an ancient, landline telephone connected to a dedicated copper wire that ran three miles down the mountain to a rural junction box—the only non-digital communication channel he maintained.

Before he could reach the phone, it rang.

The sound was a jarring, mechanical BRRRING that shattered the silence of the bunker like breaking glass.

Isaac stopped.

No one had this number. Not the county. Not the utility company. Not even the local fire department. The wire had been dead for six years.

He walked over to the phone, pulled the heavy Bakelite receiver off its cradle, and held it an inch from his ear. He didn't say a word.

Across the line, through a haze of analog static and line-loss attenuation, came the sound of breath. Fast, shallow, terrified breath.

"Isaac?" a woman’s voice whispered. The signal was weak, distorted by miles of old copper wire, but her tone was sharp with panic. "Isaac, don't use your computer. Don't touch anything with a battery."

Isaac kept his voice low, flat, and devoid of emotion. "Who is this?"

"My name is Maya Lin," the voice said. The sound of heavy rain and roaring traffic washed over her words in the background. "I'm a senior editor at The Byteline in San Francisco. I'm calling you from a coin-operated payphone outside a truck stop in Redding."

"You have the wrong number," Isaac said, preparing to hang up.

"Dr. Aris Thorne is dead, Isaac," Maya blurted out.

Isaac’s hand froze on the cradle.

Dr. Aris Thorne had been the chief security architect at the National Laboratories in Livermore—and one of the four researchers who had worked alongside Arthur Sterling back in 1998.

"The police are calling it an electrical fire," Maya rushed on, her voice cracking. "They said a prototype battery storage system in his home laboratory suffered a catastrophic short circuit. The explosion leveled half a city block. But I have his secondary lab logs, Isaac. Three hours before he died, he received a signal through his house's hot-water heater."

Isaac stared at the dead PDM chip sitting in the aluminum tray on his workbench.

"What kind of signal?" Isaac asked softly.

"A 4096-bit cryptographic key fragment," Maya replied. "Signed with Arthur Sterling’s master key. Aris tried to decode it. As soon as his local workstation finished processing the final byte, the power management chip in his main breaker panel bypassed its thermal cutoffs and dumped four hundred amps directly into his lithium storage wall."

Isaac felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. It was the same mechanism.

The attackers weren't dropping bombs or firing missiles. They were using the victims' own hardware against them—converting everyday power-management chips into remote-detonated incendiary devices using side-channel resonance.

"Why are you calling me?" Isaac asked.

"Because I found Aris’s private off-site contact list," Maya said. "There were four names on it. Dr. Aris Thorne. Dr. Helen Vance in Zurich—who died in a transformer explosion at her lab yesterday morning. Dr. Marcus Brody in Tokyo—whose car battery detonated on the highway four hours ago."

She paused, taking a ragged, trembling breath.

"You're the last name on the list, Isaac. You're the only one left alive."

Isaac turned his head toward the corner of the maintenance bay.

Mounted high on the concrete wall was the bunker's main electrical entrance panel—a three-phase, 200-amp commercial unit protected by heavy steel conduit and six independent circuit breakers.

A faint, high-pitched whine had just begun to emanate from the panel’s internal transformer.

The cooling fins on the heavy steel box were starting to hum.

Isaac’s eyes tracked down to the digital smart meter mounted beside the panel. The LCD display was frozen, its numbers glitching into garbled, unreadable lines of code.

The ambient temperature in the room began to rise.

"Maya," Isaac said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register of absolute command.

"Yes?"

"Get back in your car," Isaac said, his eyes fixed on the glowing steel panel. "Drive away from the payphone. Drive away from any highway with electronic toll gantries or smart streetlights. Find a pre-2000 mechanical vehicle, and don't stop until you reach the logging road at mile marker 42 on Route 20."

"Isaac, what's happening?"

"The protocol isn't coming," Isaac said, grabbing a heavy fiberglass-handled sledgehammer from the wall rack. "It's already here."

He slammed the phone receiver back onto its cradle, spun around, and raised the sledgehammer high over his head.

With a grunt of exertion, he brought the heavy steel head down directly onto the main power conduit entering the bunker.

SPARK!

A blinding flash of blue-white electrical light illuminated the dark vault, followed by the deafening crack of a high-voltage arc as thirty thousand volts of raw current shattered the conduit, showering the concrete floor in a rain of molten copper and white-hot sparks.

The lights in the bunker instantly died.

Isaac stood in the pitch-black subterranean room, the heavy smell of ozone and burning insulation filling his lungs, his chest heaving as the echoes of the strike faded away.

In the dark, the water pipes in the wall were still humming.
