Twenty minutes later, Maya was three blocks away, ducked into the dimly lit back hallway of an all-night diner on Geary Boulevard.

Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

He knows, she thought, leaning against the cold tile wall. Thorne knows it’s a hardware attack. He’s just trying to keep the public from realizing that every battery and circuit breaker in the city is a potential bomb.

She pulled Thorne’s business card from her pocket. It was heavy cardstock, elegant and clean.

She turned it over in her fingers—and stopped.

In the faint, flickering light of the hallway’s exit sign, she saw something embedded inside the paper. It wasn't just cardstock. Sandwiched between two thin layers of white paper was a microscopic, silver trace pattern—a passive RFID tag, thinner than a human hair.

Maya felt a jolt of cold adrenaline hit her bloodstream.

Thorne hadn't just given her his contact information. He had tagged her. The card was emitting a localized ultra-wideband ping, allowing CISA’s mobile surveillance vans to track her movement down to the meter.

"You bastard," she whispered.

She dropped the card onto the floor, brought the heel of her boot down hard, and crushed the hidden chip into copper dust.

She rushed out the back exit into the alleyway. The fog had rolled in off the bay, thick and wet, wrapping the brick walls of the alley in a damp, silent shroud.

Maya pulled her coat tight around her shoulders and walked fast toward the transit center.

She needed to get her mechanical gear out of the locker. She needed to ditch her rental car. And most importantly, she needed to find a line of communication that Thorne’s digital dragnet couldn't trace—a pre-digital, hardwired copper connection that hadn't seen an update since the twentieth century.

Because if Isaac Vance was still alive in the mountains of Washington, he was the only person left on Earth who understood how to fight a ghost that lived inside the wire.

Rain fell in heavy, relentless sheets across the Skagit River Valley, turning the narrow, unpaved logging road into a slurry of thick mud and rotting hemlock needles.

Maya Lin wrestled the steering wheel of a beat-up 1994 Ford F-150—completely devoid of modern engine control units, sensors, or GPS—as its rear tires spun for traction on the grade. Through the stuttering sweep of the single mechanical windshield wiper, the dense canopy of the Cascades looked like an impenetrable wall of dark green and black.

She had been driving for eight hours straight without a phone, a map display, or a radio, relying entirely on a dog-eared 1998 USGS topographical map tucked against the bench seat beside her.

At mile marker 42, a rusted steel cattle gate blocked the road, half-swallowed by salal bushes and wild blackberry vines. Beyond it, a faint pair of overgrown tire tracks wound upward into the dense timber toward the ridge.

Maya killed the Ford's engine. The sudden silence of the forest rushed in, broken only by the steady drumbeat of rain hitting the truck's tin roof.

She grabbed her waterproof duffel—stuffed with her notebook, the analog oscilloscope she’d hauled from San Francisco, and the handwritten signal logs from Dr. Thorne’s destroyed lab—and stepped out into the mud.

The entrance to Isaac Vance’s bunker didn't look like a high-tech fortress. It looked like an abandoned Civil Defense equipment shed built during the height of the Cold War: a low slab of moss-covered concrete set deep into the granite hillside, sealed by a heavy steel blast door painted faded olive drab.

Where the electrical entrance conduit had once entered the wall, a black, scorched crater the size of a dinner plate pitted the concrete—Isaac’s violent handiwork from the night before. The stench of burned insulation and fried copper still lingered in the damp mountain air.

Maya approached the door, her boots sinking two inches into the gravel path.

Beside the heavy steel hatch hung an old brass ships' bell attached to a braided cord. There was no intercom. No video doorbell. No keypad.

Maya grabbed the cord and pulled it hard three times.

CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.

The heavy metallic sound echoed flatly against the rock wall.

For nearly thirty seconds, nothing happened. Maya stood in the pouring rain, her coat soaking through, her heart pounding against her ribs. She wondered if he had already abandoned the site—or if she was too late.

Then came a heavy, metallic clunk as three internal locking bolts retracted inside the door frame.

The blast door swung outward six inches, revealing a dark, concrete airlock corridor lit only by the flickering red glow of an emergency chemical light stick.

Standing in the frame was Isaac Vance.

He looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot and rimmed with dark circles, his jaw covered in three days of dark stubble. He wore a heavy wool sweater stained with graphite and grease, carbon-fiber fire gloves, and carried a twelve-gauge Remington shotgun held low at his side, its safety off.

"You're late," Isaac said. His voice was a rasp, like two stones grinding together.

"I had to ditch three different surveillance vans outside Redding," Maya said, her breath fogging in the cold air. "And your logging road isn't on modern maps."

Isaac’s eyes swept past her, scanning the treeline behind her for headlights, infrared signatures, or movement. Satisfied, he stepped back and jerked his head toward the dark interior.

"Get inside. Keep your hands where I can see them, and don't touch the door frame."
