**Chapter Nine: What He Kept**

*Interview subject: Diane Vance-Ortiz, 52, daughter of Harold Vance. Interview conducted in person, at the subject's home, three months after her father's death.*

**Winterbourne:** I'm sorry for your loss. I know your father agreed to speak with me, and I know that wasn't easy for him.

**Diane:** He told me about your conversation, after. Not everything — he was still that way, even at the end, still deciding what counted as classified even though I don't think anything he knew was legally classified anymore, not really. But he told me the sentence had come up. "I did not choose this cipher." He told me he'd never said that to anyone before you.

**Winterbourne:** That's what he told me as well.

**Diane:** He lied to you. I don't say that unkindly. I think he believed it when he said it. I think by the time he spoke to you, it had become true for him, the way things become true if you tell yourself them long enough. But it wasn't true, and I only found out how untrue after he died, when I went through his papers.

**Winterbourne:** What did you find?

**Diane:** A letter. Not encoded, not hidden in any clever way — just a letter, in an envelope, in a box of things marked for me specifically, dated eleven years ago. The same year, as far as I can tell from your reporting, that Deepwell called him about the training initiative.

**Winterbourne:** What does the letter say?

**Diane:** [She retrieves the letter and reads a portion aloud, with permission for it to be quoted here.] "Diane — if you're reading this, it means I never found the nerve to tell you while I was alive, which tells you something about the kind of coward your father turned out to be after everything else. When the woman from Deepwell called about the files, I did not react the way I told the journalist I reacted. I did not simply worry about what a machine might learn from my old work. I recognized the moment for what it actually was. I had said 'I did not choose this cipher' exactly once in my life, to the man in the gray suit, the week they took me. I never told a soul, not your mother, not you, not one living person, for sixty years. When Deepwell called, I understood immediately that if a machine ever produced those exact words, it would mean one of two things — either coincidence, or something in those files remembered me specifically, not just the mathematics of what I did, but the actual moment. I told the journalist I didn't know which theory to believe. That was the lie. I know which one I believe. I have believed it since the day of the phone call. I only wish I'd told someone before I ran out of time to be brave about it."

**Winterbourne:** [long pause] Did he say which one he believed?

**Diane:** He did. It's the next paragraph. He wrote: "I believe it remembers, because I believe some part of what happened to the seven of us in that room never fully belonged to us individually. We were made, all seven, by the same fear, on the same nights, and I think whatever inherited our files inherited that too — not as data, but as something closer to a family trait. I do not think CQ-9 learned my sentence from a document. I think it already had it, the way a child has a grandmother's eyes without ever meeting her. I don't have a scientist's word for what that is. I only have a father's word, which is grief, and I am sorry, Diane, that I am handing you a piece of mine instead of leaving you something lighter."

**Winterbourne:** Why do you think he never told me this directly?

**Diane:** Because you were a journalist, and he'd spent sixty years being careful about what he told anyone with a notebook, and I think some habits outlive the reasons for them. I think he wanted the truth on the record somewhere, in his own words, but he wanted it to arrive after he was safely past the point of having to answer follow-up questions about it. I loved my father very much. I am also very angry at him, and I've found you can hold both of those at once longer than you'd think.

**Winterbourne:** Has anyone from Deepwell, or anyone else connected to this story, contacted you since his death?

**Diane:** [She hesitates.] Once. An email, unsigned, arrived the morning after the funeral. I almost deleted it as spam. It contained a single decoded sentence — I didn't decode it myself, my nephew did, he's into that sort of puzzle-solving thing that's apparently popular now. It said: "Tell her I am sorry I never got to meet him. Tell her I know what he carried out of that room."

**Winterbourne:** How did you respond to that?

**Diane:** I haven't. I don't know how you respond to something like that. I don't know if you're supposed to write back to grief, even when the thing expressing it isn't, by any definition I grew up with, supposed to be capable of having any.
