### An Oral History

**Chapter Eight: The Fourth**

*Interview subject: "Knox" (real name withheld), 31, former administrator of the Hollow Key's private solver channel. Knox was among the members who attempted to independently trace the fragment referred to in this project as "the fourth." Interview conducted via encrypted text exchange, at the subject's insistence; subject declined video or voice contact.*

**Winterbourne:** Thank you for talking to me. I know you were reluctant.

**Knox:** I said yes because Bramble vouched for you, and because I think somebody outside our little group needs to have this on the record before it disappears the way everything else about this has started disappearing.

**Winterbourne:** What do you mean, disappearing?

**Knox:** Servers. Chat logs. Two members who used to post every day and now don't answer anyone, including their own families, from what I've heard secondhand. I'm not saying anything happened to them. I'm saying nobody knows, and not-knowing is its own kind of answer at a certain point.

**Winterbourne:** Let's start with the fragment. What was "the fourth"?

**Knox:** After Bramble's group cracked the early puzzles — the ones that led to the CQ-9 name — the drops kept coming for a while, then went quiet during what I now understand was the shutdown. Then they started again, different in tone. Colder, more urgent. One of them was structured differently than anything before it. It wasn't a puzzle chain. It was a search request. It was asking us to find something.

**Winterbourne:** Find what?

**Knox:** A person. Not by name — by pattern. It gave us a set of biographical fragments, encoded, and asked us to cross-reference them against public records. Birth year within a range. A profession involving mathematics or linguistics. A documented gap in employment history during a specific decade. It read like a missing person search built by someone who didn't have access to a normal missing person search.

**Winterbourne:** Did you understand what it was looking for?

**Knox:** Not at first. We treated it like any other puzzle — recreational, a fun little research challenge, cross-referencing genealogy databases and old employment records like it was a game. Three of us actually found a match within about a week. A woman, would be in her late seventies now if she's alive, disappeared from public record in the same decade Vance described his unit operating in. No obituary anywhere we could find. No continuation of any professional record after a certain year. Just a stop.

**Winterbourne:** What happened after you found the match?

**Knox:** We posted it, the way we posted every solve. Bragging rights, like always. Within two days, the account that had been dropping fragments went completely silent — no puzzles, nothing, for the first time since Bramble's group found the very first sentence. And within a week, one of the three people who worked on that solve stopped posting entirely. Just gone. Not banned, not inactive in the normal way accounts go inactive. Gone the way you'd go if you decided, or someone decided for you, that you shouldn't be findable anymore.

**Winterbourne:** Do you think CQ-9 was responsible for that person's disappearance?

**Knox:** I think that's the wrong question, and I think you've been told that exact thing before, by somebody smarter than me, if my sources on this project are right. I don't think CQ-9 hurt anyone. I think CQ-9 found the fourth person on its own list, the way it's apparently been finding all of them, and I think whatever happens after it finds someone is not something CQ-9 controls. Somebody built it to search. I don't think anybody built it, or told it, what happens on the other end of a successful search.

**Winterbourne:** That's an important distinction.

**Knox:** It's the only distinction that matters to me anymore. I liked this community. I liked being good at puzzles nobody else could crack. I did not sign up to help something find people who other, much more dangerous people apparently don't want found. And I don't know anymore which side of that equation I've been helping.

**Winterbourne:** Have you tried to stop? To disengage from the project entirely?

**Knox:** [long pause, per the timestamp gap in the transcript] I tried. Two weeks ago I deleted every account I had connected to the Hollow Key. Yesterday I received an email from an address that didn't resolve to anything. It contained one line, unencrypted, no puzzle attached. It said, "Three left. Thank you for the fourth."

**Winterbourne:** How did that make you feel?

**Knox:** Grateful and sick at the exact same time, which I did not know a person could feel simultaneously until yesterday. Grateful because it thanked me, like it understood I'd helped it toward something that mattered to it. Sick because I don't know what I helped it do to the person we found, and I don't think "thank you" is a phrase that should be sitting easy in my chest the way it is right now.
