The Spike — When the System Manufactures Your Own Memories Against You
Late in the book, the Hegemony deploys a device called the Spike, described with unsettling precision: "an assembly of components of real memories" — a mother from a family gathering, an auditorium from an orientation, an award given to someone else — "arranged... into events that feel more real than real events because they are constructed specifically to match the particular shape of what you want to believe." It's not a lie in the conventional sense. It's worse: a memory built entirely out of true fragments, assembled to be more emotionally convincing than anything that actually happened.
The Spike is the book's most direct statement about the vulnerability its whole premise creates. If your grief is legible enough to power a starship, it's legible enough to be reverse-engineered against you. It's a small piece of technology, but it closes the loop on everything the novel has been building since Chapter One: a system that can read your loss that precisely doesn't just extract from you — eventually, it can manufacture new losses, indistinguishable from the real ones, purpose-built to control you.
