Rebellion Inside the System vs. Escape From It
A quiet but important distinction runs through E+Drive's back half: the difference between fighting the machine and leaving it. Early on, escape looks like the obvious goal — flee the Hegemony, survive the mission, get out. But by Book III's climax, the book has abandoned that framing almost entirely. When the Hegemony declares the crew "excess material," Mortimer's realization isn't that he needs to escape faster — it's that "their entire journey... [was] just data points in a larger audit," because the Hegemony had "already woven the possibility of their dissent into the armor of the next generation of submarines." There's no clean outside to escape to.
What the book offers instead is rebellion from within the system's own architecture — Mortimer choosing the dive into the factory not as a way out, but as a way of turning "excess material" into "a poison," using the very apparatus built to harvest him as the mechanism of resistance. It's a bleaker, more interesting answer than a straightforward escape plot would have given: you don't get to leave the machine. You can only decide what you do with the leverage you have while you're still inside it.
