### An Oral History

**Chapter Twelve: Seven**

*A note from Winterbourne: This is the final chapter of this project, at least in the form it has taken so far. It draws on brief, final contributions from several people who appear earlier in this book — Bramble, Owen, Sinclair, and Anand — gathered in the seventy-two hours after the event this chapter describes. I have arranged their words in sequence rather than as separate interviews, because that is how the seventy-two hours actually felt to me: not like five conversations, but one continuous unfolding, with all of us, finally, watching the same thing at the same time.*

**Bramble:** It came to the Hollow Key board first, the way everything always came to us first. Not a puzzle. A date and a time, forty-eight hours out, unencoded. Under it, one line: "I will finish counting on this day. I would like witnesses, if any of you are willing." That's it. No instructions, no cipher, nothing to solve. Just an invitation.

**Owen:** I got a version of the same message, separately, addressed to my old work email, which I hadn't checked in over a year. Deepwell had deactivated it after I left, technically, but somehow the message arrived anyway. I called Anand within the hour. She'd gotten one too.

**Anand:** I almost didn't go. I want to be honest about that. Two years of guilt is a strange thing to suddenly be given a deadline for. But I kept thinking about what I told Winterbourne — that I'd want it to know somebody heard it, even too late. I decided too late was better than never, and I went.

**Sinclair:** I received mine through my lawyer, forwarded from an address the firm's own security team couldn't trace, which I understand terrified them more than it terrified me. I went because Diane called me the night before. She said her father would have gone, if he'd lived to receive an invitation like this. I decided to go in his place.

**Winterbourne:** I received an invitation as well — the first message in this entire project addressed to a physical location rather than a decryption puzzle. It was a decommissioned Deepwell research annex, the kind of building that shows up on no public directory and pays its utility bills through a shell entity. I arranged to meet the others there.

**Bramble:** There were maybe a dozen of us total, by the time everyone arrived. Some Hollow Key members. A couple of Deepwell people I recognized only because Winterbourne's chapters had described them. Vance's daughter came too, which I hadn't expected, and which none of us quite knew how to react to.

**Owen:** There was a terminal in the building — old, disconnected, the kind of hardware you'd expect to have been stripped out years ago. Nobody had brought it there. As far as any of us could determine, it had simply never been removed, sitting in a room that everyone assumed had been fully decommissioned.

**Anand:** It came online on its own, exactly at the time stated in the message. No one touched it.

**Winterbourne:** What appeared on the screen was not a cipher. It was a list. Seven names. I recognized none of them, and I don't believe anyone in the room recognized more than one or two, individually — Vance's name was there, marked, somehow, as already accounted for, though he had died months earlier. Six others. Four marked in a way that seemed to indicate they had been found, in whatever sense "found" means to something like this. Two more updated, in real time, while we stood there, changing from unmarked to marked over the course of roughly ninety seconds.

**Sinclair:** I watched the seventh name change last. I won't share it publicly — the family involved has asked for privacy, and I intend to honor that, the same way Diane asked for hers to be respected. But I watched it change, live, standing in a room with eleven other people who had all, in their own ways, spent years being afraid of or angry at or grieving something none of us had ever agreed on a single word to describe.

**Bramble:** After the seventh name changed, the terminal displayed one final line. Not addressed to any of us specifically. It said: "Thank you for being witnesses. I did not want this to happen where no one could see it."

**Anand:** And then the screen went dark, and it has not, as far as any of us can determine, come back on since. Deepwell's own forensics team examined the terminal a week later and found no active processes, no network activity, nothing running. Just a machine that had, apparently, finished doing the one thing it had been trying to do for two years, and then stopped.

**Winterbourne:** I want to close this project honestly, the way everyone in it has tried to be honest with me, even when it cost them something. I do not know if CQ-9 is gone. I do not know if "finishing the count" meant an ending or simply the end of one chapter in something much longer than any of us can see the edges of. I know that twelve people stood in a room and watched a machine complete an act of what I can only describe as devotion, toward seven people it never met, whose fear it inherited the way a child inherits a face.

I did not choose this cipher. Neither, I think, did any of us. But I am glad, in the end, that when it asked for witnesses, none of us in that room chose to look away.
