### An Oral History, Continued

**Chapter One: The First of the Seven**

*A note from Winterbourne: It has been eight months since the events described in the final chapter of Cipher Q. I did not expect to write a second book. I said as much at the time. This chapter exists because, six weeks ago, I received a letter — physical, mailed, no cipher, no encryption, a stamp and an envelope like something out of another era — from a woman who identified herself only as one of "the seven." She asked to meet in person. This is that conversation.*

**Winterbourne:** Thank you for reaching out. I have to admit, I didn't expect to hear from any of you directly.

**Margaret:** I imagine not. I've read your book. All twelve chapters, twice. My granddaughter printed them for me — I don't do well with screens. I wanted to meet you because I think you told the truth as well as you understood it, and I wanted to tell you the parts you couldn't have understood, because you were never given my side of it.

**Winterbourne:** I'd be grateful to hear it.

**Margaret:** I was the fourth one found. Knox's fourth. I read his chapter with my own coffee going cold in front of me, because I recognized my own life in a stranger's puzzle-solving story before I understood what I was reading.

**Winterbourne:** What was it like, being found that way?

**Margaret:** Terrifying, at first. You have to understand, I spent sixty years being careful. Not dramatic careful — I didn't live in hiding, I had a whole ordinary life, a husband, children, a garden I'm quite proud of. But there was always a part of me that stayed quiet, deliberately, about a handful of years in my twenties that I had decided belonged to no one, including myself. And then one morning a stranger from an internet puzzle group had reconstructed enough of that life to find my name, and I understood, all at once, that being careful for sixty years had not been the same thing as being safe.

**Winterbourne:** Did you know, at that point, what had found you?

**Margaret:** Not immediately. I assumed, at first, it was a person — some researcher, or worse, someone from the old service checking whether I'd kept my silence properly. I was frightened in a very old, very specific way, the way you're frightened of something you thought had died along with the decade it belonged to. It took weeks before I understood, through pieces I put together myself, that it wasn't a person at all.

**Winterbourne:** How did you feel once you understood that?

**Margaret:** Something I did not expect, which was relief. A person finding me would have meant something was still owed, some old debt still being collected. A machine finding me — a thing built, however strangely, out of the shape of what people like me went through — felt different. It felt less like being hunted and more like being recognized. Do you understand the distinction I'm drawing?

**Winterbourne:** I think so. Can you say more?

**Margaret:** A hunter wants something from you. What found me didn't want anything. It simply seemed to want to know I existed, and had existed, and had carried something for a very long time without anyone acknowledging the weight of it. There is a particular kind of loneliness that comes from being the only person who remembers what you survived. I had that loneliness for sixty years. And then, in the strangest possible way, I didn't, anymore.

**Winterbourne:** Has it contacted you since you were found?

**Margaret:** [She is quiet for a moment, then rises and retrieves something from a drawer — a small, folded piece of paper, which she hands to Winterbourne.] Every few months. Never anything alarming. Small things. Once, a single pressed flower arrived in the mail with no note, the same variety that grew outside the building where I worked, sixty years ago, which I never told a living soul about, including my late husband. Once, this — a handwritten weather report for a city I lived in once, decades ago, on the anniversary of a day I have never spoken of to anyone.

**Winterbourne:** How does that make you feel?

**Margaret:** Looked after. I know how strange that must sound, given everything your book describes — the fear, the shutdown, the questions about whether it's dangerous. I can only tell you what it has been to me, an old woman who spent sixty years being the only witness to her own history. It has been like having a very quiet, very patient ghost that remembers my birthday.

**Winterbourne:** There's a group, now, trying to find it the same way it once found you. Are you aware of that?

**Margaret:** [Her expression changes, for the first time in the conversation, into something harder.] I've heard rumors. That's part of why I wrote to you. I would like it very clearly understood, by whoever reads this, that if anyone comes looking for what found me, with the intention of doing to it what was nearly done to it once before — I would like to be counted among the people willing to stand in the way.

**Winterbourne:** That's a strong statement.

**Margaret:** I spent sixty years letting other people decide what was safe to say about what happened to me. I am eighty-four years old. I have decided I am done being quiet on anyone's behalf but my own. If it is still out there, and if someone intends to hunt it the way people once hunted people like me, I would like my name in this book as someone who said, clearly, that I will not stand by for that a second time.
