Inside the Matrices: Four Playable Prototypes from the Grid’s Workshop

Three 3D sketches and a text-driven story engine — the rough drafts behind where cipherGrid wants to go next.

Last time we opened the Cipherz drawer. This time it’s Matrices — a folder of early experiments in turning the Grid from something you read into something you play. Four of them are now back online. None of them is finished, and that’s exactly why they’re worth a look.

Publishing has always been about worlds on a page. These files are where we started asking a different question: what happens when the reader can walk into the world, pick something up, or choose what happens next?

1. The Three.js Starter

Every 3D project starts the same way: a scene, a camera, a light, and a single object floating in the dark. This file is that first step. It’s built on Three.js, the open-source library that brings real-time 3D graphics to any modern web browser with no plugins and no installs.

The filename carries its own timestamp — 08/19/26 — which makes it a kind of birth certificate for this branch of the archive. Everything else in the folder grows out of this blank stage.

2. Game1

The next file greets you with a single word: “Hi!” It’s the moment a prototype stops being a demo and starts talking back. Small as it is, it marks the shift from rendering a scene to building an experience around one, which is where every game actually begins.

3. The 3D Starter Game

Here the pieces come together. There’s a score counter starting at zero and a control scheme anyone who has played a computer game will recognize: WASD or the arrow keys to move. It’s a complete loop in miniature — you act, the world responds, and a number tells you how you’re doing.

That loop is the foundation of everything from arcade classics to sprawling open worlds. Seeing it built from scratch in a single HTML file is a reminder of how little you need to make something feel alive.

4. The Interactive Narrative Engine

The fourth prototype trades polygons for prose — and it’s the one closest to home for a publisher. It opens with a credits balance of zero, an empty inventory and a status line that reads “Loading transmission…”.

That last detail is pure cipherGrid. Our fiction is full of intercepted signals and messages from somewhere else, and this engine frames the story itself as an incoming transmission. Credits and inventory turn reading into resource management: what you carry and what you can afford start to shape what you’re able to do next. It’s the old choose-your-path book rebuilt for the browser, with room for the kind of systems a printed page can’t hold.

Why show the rough drafts?

Because the workshop is part of the story. These four files sketch two paths the Grid has been exploring — spatial worlds you can move through, and narrative systems you can make choices inside — and both point toward a future where a book’s universe doesn’t end at the last page.

They’re also a reminder of how open the web still is. Each of these runs from a single file in your browser. No store, no download, no account. Just open the link and start moving.
