From the Vault: Three Decrypt Apps from the Early Grid

Old files, new light — a Caesar shift, a sealed news dispatch, and a Vigenère wire feed, now back online.

Every archive has a drawer of experiments. Ours is a folder called Cipherz, and we’ve just moved three of its oldest residents onto permanent hosting. Each one is a small, self-contained web page. Each one asks you to do something most websites never do: work for the text.

That idea has been at the heart of cipherGrid from the start. The name isn’t decoration. Our books are full of encrypted messages, sealed transmissions and people trying to read what they weren’t meant to read, and these three apps were where we first tried putting that experience directly in the reader’s hands.

1. The Cipher Sandbox

Open the Cipher Sandbox

The first page is a workbench. It stacks three ciphers in historical order and lets you run each one in the browser. The two classical ciphers — Caesar and Vigenère — are powered by Python running directly in the page. The third is AES-256-GCM, executed through the browser’s native Web Crypto engine.

The arc is the point. Caesar shifts every letter by a fixed amount; there are only 25 possible keys, and you can break it by hand over coffee. Vigenère layers a repeating keyword over the text, which held up for centuries before statistical attacks cracked it open. AES-256-GCM is what actually protects your banking and messaging today, and the “GCM” part means it doesn’t just hide the message — it authenticates it, so tampering is detectable.

Type the same sentence into all three and watch what comes out. The jump from a readable jumble to an opaque block of bytes is roughly two thousand years of cryptographic history in three clicks.

2. Sealed Dispatch

The second app turns the news into a puzzle. Dated Monday, September 28, 2026, it presents five stories from that day’s headlines, each one encrypted on its own. You decrypt them in any order, and a counter tracks your progress from zero of five.

It’s a simple mechanic with a surprising effect. A headline you would skim past on any other site becomes something you earned. Reading slows down. Attention sharpens. It’s the same feeling we try to build into the fiction: information is never free, and what you have to unlock tends to stick.

3. Incoming Wire Batch #05

Open Incoming Wire Batch #05

The third page is styled as a verified wire feed, published September 29, 2026, with every dispatch marked Encrypted. Unlike the sealed dispatch, this one hands you the tools up front: an editorial brief names the cipher (standard A–Z Vigenère, preserving case and punctuation) and prints the decryption key in plain sight.

That’s deliberate. The ciphertext isn’t a secret — it’s a ritual. Headlines arrive as strings like “Mcevbjeas Lttb Fxhvf Rkbv,” and the reader’s client does the work of turning them back into English. Run the key and the first dispatch resolves into a hurricane bearing down on Baja California; the next into a late-season nor’easter on the East Coast. The news is the same news. The act of reading it is not.

If you want a challenge, skip the decrypt button and try one headline by hand. Line the key up under the ciphertext, shift each letter back, and see how long it takes before the first word clicks.

Why bring them back?

Partly for the record. These pages were early prototypes for ideas that now run through the Grid — the Transmission puzzle series, the Cryptography in Fiction articles, and a catalogue of novels where a decoded message is often the turning point.

And partly because they still work. No accounts, no downloads, no tracking — just a page, a key and a message waiting to be read. A fair warning, though: Caesar and Vigenère are for play and teaching only. If you ever need to protect something real, the third cipher in the Sandbox is the one that counts.
