What the Dark Holds / The Storm

Heading into the book's back half now — expect real plot detail from here on.

"What the Dark Holds" deepens the mystery on the lunar side: Nikolai's radar has found a buried structure with an internal geometry that has no business existing in three-and-a-half-billion-year-old impact geology, and his careful, philosophical conversations with Leila about what kind of entity builds something meant to last that long — and then leaves — are the intellectual heart of the book. His formulation stuck with me: whoever built it either isn't coming back, or is waiting, and the waiting is deliberate, calibrated to a civilization's technological threshold rather than a calendar date.

"The Storm" is the book's best pure set piece: a solar storm far exceeding predictions strands the lunar crew in their most heavily shielded module, cuts their bandwidth to text-only with a forty-minute round-trip delay, and forces Sarah Kimathi into a genuinely tense sequence of triage decisions about power allocation. What makes it work isn't the danger itself — it's that the storm becomes the setting for Nikolai's first full articulation of what he thinks the discovery means philosophically, delivered to the whole crew crammed into a shelter module with nothing else to do but listen. Corvus consistently finds ways to let crisis and reflection occupy the same scene, and it's one of the novel's most reliable pleasures.
