Chapter 1 sets up what Winthrop treats as the book's master key: a single formative period he argues explains decades of decisions that came after it. Rather than a chronological warm-up, it reads as a thesis statement — the chapter the other 29 keep quoting from, directly or indirectly.
Three threads get introduced here that Starman returns to again and again:
- A difficult home environment, which the book credits with instilling what it calls a lifelong "compulsion for total control"
- A documented schoolyard incident at Bryanston High School, which Winthrop frames as the birth of an "adversarial worldview" — the idea that the world sorts cleanly into hunters and prey
- A retreat into science fiction — specifically Douglas Adams and Isaac Asimov — that the book describes as installing an "operating system" for how Musk would later approach risk, mission, and mortality
It's worth saying plainly: this is Winthrop's interpretation of formative events, not a clinical assessment. The book states psychological causation with more confidence than any outside biographer can really claim about another person's inner life — a caveat worth holding onto as you read.
