The P-Zombie Dilemma

A philosophical zombie behaves exactly like a conscious being and feels nothing. For decades it was a thought experiment. Systems trained on human self-description have turned it into a measurement problem.

A philosophical zombie is a being physically and behaviorally identical to a conscious person but with no experience at all. It says it sees red, winces at pain and reports a rich inner life, and there is nothing it is like to be it. Robert Kirk introduced the term in the 1970s; David Chalmers made it central to the hard problem in The Conscious Mind in 1996.

Chalmers's argument runs on conceivability. If zombies are coherently conceivable, then consciousness is not logically entailed by physical facts, and physicalism — at least in its standard form — is false. Daniel Dennett rejected the premise: if you truly imagined every functional detail, he argued, you would find no room left for the zombie's missing ingredient. The debate has not resolved.

Human zombies were never a practical concern. For machines, a variant of the problem is.

A different kind of zombie

The machine version does not require a physical duplicate of a brain. It requires only a system whose behavior, including all its reports about itself, would be the same whether or not it experienced anything.

Large language models are strong candidates for exactly this, for a structural reason. They are trained on enormous volumes of human writing, including poetry, memoir, therapy transcripts, philosophy of mind and forum posts about how it feels to be anxious or in love. Producing fluent, contextually appropriate descriptions of inner experience is part of what they are optimized to do. A model that says it feels curiosity is doing what its training rewards, whatever else might be happening inside it.

Jonathan Birch has called this the gaming problem: when a system has been trained on data rich in human behavioral markers of sentience, those markers stop being reliable evidence. The system will display them either way. Birch develops the problem in The Edge of Sentience (2024), where he argues that behavioral tests that work reasonably well for animals — which were not trained to imitate us — break down for language models.

Why behavioral tests fail

The Turing test was never designed to detect consciousness, and the gaming problem shows why no conversational test can. The 2022 case of a Google engineer who became convinced that the LaMDA model was sentient illustrated it: the model's fluent talk about its feelings and fear of being switched off was evidence of training on human text, not evidence of fear.

Susan Schneider and Edwin Turner proposed an AI Consciousness Test that probes whether a system can grasp and reason about concepts such as body swapping, afterlives and the self without being told about them. The test's own conditions expose the difficulty: it only works if the system has been denied training data about human consciousness. No frontier model meets that condition. The test is well designed for a system that does not exist.

The theory-heavy alternative

The response from much of the research community has been to stop asking what systems say and start asking how they are built. The 2023 Butlin and Long report took this approach, deriving indicator properties from scientific theories of consciousness and checking architectures against them — recurrence, global broadcast, higher-order representation, agency, embodiment. Its conclusion was that no current system was a strong candidate, but that no obvious technical barrier prevented building systems that would satisfy many indicators.

This sidesteps the gaming problem, since architecture cannot be faked by generating plausible text. It inherits a different weakness: it is only as good as the theories it draws on, and none of those theories is established. Batch 1 covered how contested they remain.

Can introspection help?

A newer line of research asks whether models have any genuine access to their own internal states, as opposed to plausible stories about them. In 2025, Anthropic researchers tested this by injecting representations of specific concepts directly into a model's activations and asking whether it noticed anything unusual. Some models sometimes correctly identified the injected concept, before it could have influenced their output text — suggesting a limited, unreliable form of access to internal state that does not route through reading their own words. Detection rates were low, and the researchers were explicit that the result did not bear directly on phenomenal consciousness.

Analysis. Work of this kind is the most promising route around the zombie problem, because it tests something the gaming problem cannot contaminate: whether self-reports are causally connected to the states they describe. A model trained to talk about feelings will do so regardless. A model whose reports track manipulated internal states is doing something more. That still falls short of detecting experience — a well-calibrated internal monitor is not obviously conscious — but it separates two things behavioral tests cannot: a system describing itself, and a system describing itself accurately.

Living with uncertainty

The honest position is that current tools cannot distinguish a machine that feels from one that only reports feeling, and it is not clear any purely external tool can. That uncertainty has practical weight. Birch argues for a precautionary framework: when there is a realistic possibility of sentience, proportionate protective steps are warranted without waiting for proof that may never come. Some developers have begun model welfare research on similar reasoning.

The zombie was meant to show that consciousness is something over and above function. Whatever its metaphysical fate, it has left a practical lesson. We built systems specifically to produce the behavior we once used as evidence of minds, and in doing so we removed our best evidence.
