"Excess Material" — The Horror of Corporate Language
Some of the most chilling writing in E+Drive isn't in its body-horror sequences — it's in its paperwork. When the Hegemony finally moves to reclaim the Acheron, it doesn't threaten the crew. It speaks "a series of coordinates and a timestamp," declaring the ship and everyone aboard it "excess material" — a term the text notes "carried the same clinical weight as a stillborn ship." No anger, no cruelty. Just an inventory correction.
This is the book's sharpest recurring move: dressing its cosmic horror in the vocabulary of institutions everyone recognizes. Sheila describes her own recruitment testing not as an honor but, in hindsight, as "an inventory." The Hegemony's asset liquidation code is literally called "Seven," filed and categorized like any operational directive. Mortimer's realization near the book's climax lands the theme directly: "There was no war to win. There was only the management of the inventory." The horror isn't that the universe is hostile. It's that the universe has a back office, and the back office has already filed the appropriate forms for your disposal.
