This isn't a costless trade. A well-designed GUI does something a chat box doesn't: it shows you the entire possibility space at a glance. Open a menu and you can see everything the tool can do, whether you knew to ask for it or not. A conversation only shows you what you thought to request. Discoverability — stumbling onto a feature you didn't know existed — gets harder in a world where the interface is a blank box waiting for your intent instead of a labeled panel of options.

There's a craft dimension too. Good interface design is an entire discipline built around reducing cognitive load through visual hierarchy, spatial memory, and consistent patterns. A lot of that expertise doesn't transfer cleanly to designing a good conversation — turn-taking, disambiguation, knowing when to ask a clarifying question versus just guessing well, are a different skill set, and the field is still figuring out its own best practices in real time.

## Agentic UI Is the Next Layer, Not the Last One

The honest version of this shift isn't "buttons are dead." It's that the button layer is becoming a fallback rather than the primary path. Increasingly, the conversational layer sits on top and decides, on your behalf, which underlying button to press, which form to fill, which settings toggle to flip — the GUI still exists, but as plumbing rather than as the thing you interact with directly. That's a genuinely different relationship with software than anything the last three decades trained people to expect.

The interfaces that will age well through this transition are probably the ones that treat conversation and direct manipulation as complementary, not competing: let people type or speak their intent when that's faster, but keep a visible, explorable structure underneath for the moments when browsing beats asking.

## Trust Is the Bottleneck, Not Capability

There's a quieter reason this transition is slower than the technology alone would suggest: trust. A button does one predictable thing every time you press it. A conversational interface has to earn the belief that it understood you correctly before you'll hand it anything consequential — a payment, a delete operation, a message sent on your behalf. Early conversational tools that got this wrong, confidently doing the wrong thing instead of asking, set the trust-building process back for the whole category. The technical capability to route intent to the correct action has, in a lot of cases, outpaced people's willingness to stop checking the work.
