# The Countdown Nobody Put on the Calendar

Most fictional countdowns are invented for the story — a bomb timer, a ransom deadline, a ticking clock built to manufacture tension. "Q-Day" isn't one of those. It's the informal name for a real, anticipated event: the day a quantum computer becomes powerful enough to break the encryption schemes that currently protect most of the world's digital communication. Nobody knows the exact date. Serious estimates range from several years out to a couple of decades. But unlike most fictional deadlines, this one isn't rhetorical — governments and standards bodies are already treating it as real enough to plan around.

That's what makes post-quantum fiction a genuinely different kind of story from the general hacking thriller. A hacking plot usually needs an antagonist who's simply smarter, faster, or better resourced than the protagonist. A Q-Day plot doesn't need a villain at all — the threat is closer to a natural disaster with a fuzzy arrival time, driven by physics rather than malice, bearing down on every piece of infrastructure that currently assumes today's encryption will hold indefinitely.

Fiction hasn't fully caught up to this yet, and that's the gap worth exploring across this series. What actually breaks when Q-Day arrives, and what doesn't? Who's already exploiting the gap between "encrypted now" and "decryptable eventually"? And what does the real, ongoing effort to build quantum-resistant defenses look like as a story, rather than a standards document?
