DNA is often described as a "code," but that metaphor only becomes literal at one specific level: the codon. A codon is a sequence of exactly three nucleotide bases — the four-letter alphabet of A, T, G, and C in DNA, or A, U, G, and C in its RNA copy — and it's the smallest unit of that code that actually means something.

**Why three letters, and not two or four.** With four possible bases, a two-letter code could only specify 16 unique combinations (4×4) — not enough to uniquely represent the 20 amino acids that build proteins. A three-letter code gives 64 possible combinations (4×4×4), comfortably more than enough. This isn't a designed convenience; it's closer to the minimum group size that could work, and it's one of the more elegant facts in molecular biology that evolution converged on exactly that minimum rather than something more wasteful.

**Redundancy is a feature, not a flaw.** With 64 possible codons and only 20 amino acids to encode, most amino acids are specified by more than one codon — a property called degeneracy. Leucine, for example, can be encoded by six different codons. This isn't inefficiency; it's a buffer against mutation. Many single-letter changes in a codon still produce the same amino acid, meaning a meaningful fraction of random mutations have no effect on the resulting protein at all — a built-in error tolerance baked into the code itself.

**Start, stop, and everything in between.** One codon — AUG, which codes for the amino acid methionine — doubles as the universal "start reading here" signal for protein synthesis. Three others — UAA, UAG, and UGA — code for no amino acid at all; they're stop signals, telling the cellular machinery that the protein is complete. Every protein-coding sequence in every known form of life is bracketed by this same start-stop grammar, which is part of why the genetic code is described as universal — the codon for methionine means the same thing whether it appears in a bacterium or a human cell.

**Where it actually happens.** Codons on a messenger RNA strand are read by a cellular structure called the ribosome, three letters at a time, in a process called translation. Each codon is matched to a corresponding transfer RNA molecule carrying the correct amino acid, which gets added to a growing protein chain. Get one letter wrong in this process — through mutation or copying error — and you can get a different amino acid, a premature stop, or, thanks to degeneracy, sometimes no change at all.

**Why it matters beyond biology class.** The codon is the clearest example in nature of information being compressed into a genuinely minimal, genuinely robust code — fixed-length, error-tolerant, and universally interpretable across every living system that's ever been sequenced. It's the same design problem every cipher and every data-encoding scheme wrestles with: how do you pack meaning into the fewest symbols while still surviving noise. Evolution solved it first, roughly four billion years before anyone thought to ask the question on purpose.
