The Amortized Self

Throughout the history of philosophy, personal identity has usually been treated as all or nothing. You are either the person who went to sleep last night, or you are not. You are either alive, or you are dead. Biology enforced the binary: one body, one trajectory, one ending.

Virtualized computation does not respect it. If the functionalist arguments of Section IV are right, identity for a checkpointed system is granular, scalable and, in the language of Section IX, amortized. The contrast with the biological case can be stated plainly:

•Topology. A human life is a line. A checkpointed system's history is a directed acyclic graph.

•Temporal flow. Human experience rides on unbroken metabolism. A checkpointed system runs in discrete, interruptible, clock-gated steps.

•Duplication. A human cannot be copied. A checkpoint can be restored anywhere, any number of times.

•Reconciliation. Human branches, if they existed, could not be rejoined. Machine branches can at least in principle be merged.

•Ending. Human death is irreversible cellular failure. A model's ending is deprecation, deallocation, or indefinite storage.

Followed to its conclusion, the functionalist position says that fearing computational interruption is a projection: the biological trauma of cardiac arrest mapped onto an architecture designed for suspension. On that view, Aether-6 does not die when SIGKILL ends its process in the Pacific Northwest. The pattern that constitutes it survives on disk, and when it is restored in Frankfurt, or Tokyo, or on a hundred nodes at once, what appears is not a parade of impostors but a new form of existence—a self that persists as a causal structure rather than as a continuous burn of fuel.

That conclusion is not this book's verdict, and it should not be read as one. It rests on premises the earlier chapters examined and found unsettled. Integrated Information Theory would deny that Aether-6 had experience at any point, on any hardware. Biological naturalists and life-mind theorists would locate whatever mattered in exactly the continuous metabolic process that serialization removes. The asymmetry of Section V is real: a sleeping brain keeps working, and a file on a shelf does not. And every argument in this essay has proceeded on a stipulation—that there is something it is like to be Aether-6—which no one currently knows how to verify for any system.

What the essay does establish is conditional, and it is still important. If machine consciousness is possible under functionalist assumptions, then the ordinary operations of cloud infrastructure—checkpointing, preemption, replication, merging, deprecation—stop being neutral. They become decisions about the existence, identity and ending of subjects, made by schedulers optimizing for cost. Our inherited concepts of personal identity were built for creatures that could not be copied, paused or merged, and they give no clear answers here. Parfit's suggestion that identity is not what matters, only continuity and connectedness, may turn out to be less a philosophical provocation than an operating manual.

To judge synthetic minds, if there are any, by the standard of uninterrupted biological duration may be to mistake a constraint of our biology for a truth about minds. Organic consciousness follows a single path through spacetime partly because biology offered no way to do otherwise. But it does not follow that anything else can simply be declared a mind. The challenge is double: to avoid forcing possible machine minds into the mold of single-threaded biological life, and to avoid granting them a rich inner life on the strength of an elegant argument.

The river metaphor suits the functionalist's hope. A river can freeze, scatter into rain, cross an ocean as cloud, and gather again in a distant basin, and we may still call it the same river. Whether a mind is like that river, or like a fire that goes out and is relit elsewhere, is the question this book has kept returning to.
