Camera hardware and publishing platforms are beginning to build in cryptographic signing that attaches a verifiable, tamper-evident record to media at the moment it's captured — establishing a chain of custody from the sensor onward, rather than trying to reverse-engineer whether a piece of media was manipulated after it's already circulating. This flips the entire framework: instead of asking "can we prove this is fake," the question becomes "can this piece of media prove it's real," with the burden of demonstrating authenticity shifted onto the content itself rather than onto forensic investigators working backward.

## The Adoption Problem This Creates

Provenance systems only work if there's broad enough adoption that the absence of a cryptographic signature becomes meaningful on its own. If only some cameras and some platforms support signing, an unsigned piece of real footage looks exactly as suspicious as a genuinely fake one, which doesn't solve the trust problem so much as relocate it. Getting there requires camera manufacturers, publishing platforms, and social networks to converge on shared standards, which is exactly the kind of coordination problem that tends to move slowly even when everyone involved agrees it's worth solving. In the interim — likely a long interim — a lot of media will exist in an ambiguous zone where neither fakery nor authenticity can be cleanly established, and institutions built for a world of presumed authenticity will have to operate without it.
