A device that helps someone notice a genuinely disruptive pattern — inconsistent bedtimes, alcohol's measurable effect on their own recovery, a mattress that's actually the problem — is providing real value. A device that turns a normal night's rest into a source of anxiety because the score dipped two points below yesterday's, or that gates genuinely useful insight behind a premium subscription tier layered on top of hardware you already paid for, is monetizing a manufactured problem it's simultaneously positioned as the solution to. Both versions exist inside the same product category, and the line between them isn't always obvious from the marketing.

## The Clinical Term for the Downside

Sleep researchers have started using a specific term for people who become so focused on optimizing their tracked sleep metrics that the anxiety over the numbers itself starts interfering with actual rest: orthosomnia, modeled deliberately on orthorexia, the term for an unhealthy fixation on eating correctly. That naming is telling — it suggests the pattern is common and recognizable enough to warrant its own label, not a rare edge case. The irony writes itself: a device meant to improve sleep by making it measurable can, for a meaningful subset of users, actively worsen sleep by making a nightly biological process into something to perform well at, checked and worried over the way a stock portfolio gets checked, rather than something the body was always capable of doing without a dashboard.
