What kind of book this actually is
Oakhaven has not seen a blue sky in living memory. The city runs on the exhaust of twelve cathedral-sized Great Public Boilers, and the resulting haze separates the Upper District — merchant lords sipping brandy above the smog line — from the Lower Vents and the Iron District, where the air is thick enough to chew and the local doctors stopped calling the resulting cough remarkable generations ago.
Into this sits Amelia Featherstone: thirty-one, twice denied guild membership, permanently stained with machine oil, and running a workshop full of glorious, half-successful inventions (a mechanical bird that has never once managed to land is a personal favorite detail). When the city's most celebrated horologist is found flash-frozen mid-motion in his own shop — a physically impossible "cold-steam" event — Amelia's investigation collides with a bronze fountain erupting in glowing, mathematically inscribed steam, a blacklisted airship rigger named Silas who knows the city's forgotten under-infrastructure better than anyone alive, and her own father's locked journal, full of a theory everyone in Oakhaven's academic establishment had dismissed: that the city wasn't built on a coal seam at all, but on top of something else entirely.
Structurally, Soot and Sapphire reads like a tightly wound mystery-adventure novella — no formal chapter breaks, just scene-to-scene momentum carried by short, punchy transitions. That makes it a fast, immersive read, and it's also why this review series groups its reactions by story movement rather than by chapter number.
