From Deckers to Compilers: How Speculative Fiction Mapped the Tech Century

When science fiction looks at technology, it rarely predicts the device correctly. Instead, at its best, it predicts the friction: where human habit, greed, institutional failure, and adaptability collide with new machinery.

In Snow Crash, technology is ubiquitous commerce. The danger shifts from physical state violence to memetic vulnerability—ideas, protocols, and cognitive viruses spreading rapidly through uncritical networks.

Phase 3: The Compiler and the Phyle (The Diamond Age)

By 1995, Stephenson pushed the horizon past screens and virtual avatars into the material world itself. In The Diamond Age, the digital has collapsed back into the physical via molecular nanotechnology.

When matter compilers make food, blankets, and basic consumer goods essentially free, the economic battleground changes.
