The short version

Echoes of Eternity is a big-swing indie space opera about inherited rebellion, the cost of foresight, and what it means to be guided versus free — wrapped around a genuinely inventive central artifact. It's stronger on ideas and atmosphere than on tight plotting, and it's most alive in its quieter scenes: a clone questioning its first order, an AI asking a genuine question back, an explorer watching a future self she doesn't recognize.

What works

The Chrome Server is a well-drawn antagonist-that-isn't-quite, the multi-generational structure (C-17 to Lyra) gives the book's central theme real weight, and the warp-bubble sequences are legitimately unsettling in a way I haven't seen executed quite like this before. The book is also unafraid of emotional cost — nothing Lyra gains along the way comes free, and the ending honors that.

What's rougher

The prose leans repetitive in the middle stretch, circling the same images and realizations more than once before moving on, and the back third introduces its biggest new stakes (the cabal, the fortress outside time) fast enough that the plotting feels compressed rather than built. Alistair, the book's most concrete antagonist, is underwritten next to how vivid the abstract threats are. Readers who want airtight plot mechanics may find some threads left looser than expected.

3 out of 5 stars. A book with more good ideas than its plotting fully supports — but the ideas are good enough, and the ending sincere enough, that I'd still point curious readers toward it.

Best for

Readers who love soft SF over hard SF, stories about AI that resist easy good/evil framing, and time-travel books more interested in identity and consequence than in tidy paradox mechanics. Fans of introspective, atmosphere-first space opera will get the most out of this one; readers who want brisk, plot-forward pacing throughout may find the middle stretch slow going.
