Every symmetric cipher you've heard of — AES, DES, ChaCha20, RC4 — falls into one of two families: block ciphers or stream ciphers. The distinction sounds academic until you realize it explains why some encryption feels instant on a video call and why other systems process a whole file before you see anything happen at all.

## The core difference: chunks vs. flow

A **block cipher** encrypts data in fixed-size chunks — typically 128 bits at a time for AES. If your message doesn't divide evenly into blocks, it gets padded out to fill the last one. Each block goes through the same transformation, run through multiple rounds of substitution and permutation, and comes out the other side as ciphertext.

A **stream cipher** doesn't wait for a full block. It generates a continuous stream of pseudorandom bits — a keystream — and combines it with your plaintext one bit or byte at a time, usually with a simple XOR operation. There's no padding, no waiting for a chunk to fill up. Data goes in, encrypted data comes out, continuously.

## Why the distinction actually matters

**Speed and latency.** Stream ciphers tend to be faster for real-time data — audio, video, anything where you can't afford to buffer a full block before encrypting. That's part of why stream ciphers historically showed up in things like wireless protocols and VoIP.

**Error propagation.** This is the part people underestimate. In a block cipher running in certain modes (like CBC), a single corrupted bit in the ciphertext can scramble the entire block it's in — and sometimes the next one too. In a stream cipher, a corrupted bit generally only corrupts that one bit or byte. That makes stream ciphers more forgiving over noisy channels, but it comes with its own risk: reusing a keystream, even once, can catastrophically break the whole scheme.

**Structure vs. simplicity.** Block ciphers are built from well-studied, heavily analyzed round functions, which is part of why AES has survived decades of cryptanalysis without a practical break. Stream ciphers are structurally simpler, which makes them faster but also historically more prone to design flaws — RC4 is the cautionary tale here, riddled with biases that eventually got it deprecated everywhere that mattered.

## Where each one actually shows up

- **AES (block cipher):** the default choice for disk encryption, TLS, file encryption — anywhere you're encrypting data at rest or in discrete transfers

- **ChaCha20 (stream cipher):** built specifically to be fast without hardware acceleration, now widely used in TLS and mobile contexts where AES's hardware advantage doesn't apply

- **RC4 (stream cipher, deprecated):** once everywhere — WEP, early TLS — now avoided entirely due to known keystream biases

Interestingly, block ciphers can be run in modes (like CTR) that make them *behave* like stream ciphers — generating a keystream from the block cipher itself rather than encrypting fixed chunks directly. So the line between the two isn't always as clean in practice as the textbook definition suggests.
