For years, the dominant strategy in AI was blunt: bigger model, more parameters, more compute, better results. It worked remarkably well, right up until it didn't. The curve of "more scale, more capability" started bending, and the cost of chasing it kept climbing in a straight line. The next real leap isn't coming from a bigger single brain. It's coming from architecture — from how the compute is organized, not just how much of it there is.

## The Monolith's Diminishing Returns

Training a single dense model where every parameter activates on every input is expensive in a specific way: you pay the full cost of the whole network for every single token, whether the task at hand needed the model's expertise in, say, poetry or protein folding or neither. That's an enormous amount of waste baked into the design. Scaling that approach further means scaling the waste right along with the capability.

Mixture of Experts (MoE) architectures attack this directly. Instead of one dense network, you build many smaller "expert" sub-networks and a lightweight router that decides, per token, which handful of experts actually need to fire. A model might have hundreds of billions of total parameters but only activate a small fraction of them for any given piece of input. You get access to enormous capacity without paying enormous compute for every request.

## Routing Is the Real Innovation

The clever part isn't the experts themselves — it's the gating mechanism that decides who gets called. A well-trained router learns to specialize traffic: certain experts drift toward handling code, others toward multilingual text, others toward a narrow slice of reasoning tasks nobody explicitly labeled. Nobody hand-designs this division of labor; it emerges from training, the same way a large company's departments emerge from repeated need rather than an org chart drawn on day one.

This is also where things get fragile in interesting ways. Bad routing decisions — sending a token to an expert that's mediocre at the task — can quietly tank quality in ways that are hard to debug, because the failure is distributed across a system rather than sitting in one obviously broken component. Getting routing right is arguably harder than getting any individual expert right.

## From One Model to a Swarm

The MoE pattern inside a single model is the small-scale version of a bigger trend: compound systems built from many narrow agents rather than one generalist doing everything end to end. A coding agent that hands off search to one tool, math to another, and long-term memory to a third isn't fundamentally different in spirit from a router sending tokens to specialized sub-networks — it's the same idea, one level up the stack. Narrow, well-scoped components, coordinated by something whose only job is deciding who does the work.

This matters economically as much as technically. Inference cost is now the dominant recurring expense for anyone deploying AI at scale, more than training ever was for most production use cases. A system that only pays for the experts it actually needs, per request, per task, is a fundamentally different cost curve than one that pays full price every time regardless of what was asked.

## The End of One-Size-Fits-All

The practical upshot is a shift in how systems get designed. Instead of asking "how do we make the model bigger," the more useful question is becoming "how do we make the model or system smarter about deciding what it doesn't need to use." That's a much less flashy problem than raw parameter count, and it's also the one with more room left to run.
