AI, Neuralink, and the Reckoning (Chapters 19–30)

A quick and important flag before this one: the final third of the book moves further into territory that reads less like reported history and more like informed speculation about where things are headed — a Delaware Supreme Court ruling, a specific trillion-dollar pay figure, named AI model generations, and other details dated into late 2025 and 2026. Treat these chapters as the author's extrapolation rather than confirmed fact, and it's worth checking current reporting if you want to know what's actually happened by the time you're reading this.

With that caveat, the narrative arc is ambitious. Chapters 19–20 cover the rapid build-out of an AI supercomputing cluster and a chatbot product positioned as a truth-seeking alternative to competitors. Chapters 21–22 turn to Neuralink, covering a speech-restoration breakthrough and then a more speculative “cybernetic dawn” chapter on human-AI symbiosis, which is also where the book spends the most time on ethical pushback.

Chapter 23 covers an enormous, contested executive pay package; chapter 24 covers international regulatory and labor friction. Chapter 25 is the book's most sensitive chapter, addressing Musk's proximity to information that surfaced from an unrelated, widely covered scandal — Winthrop is careful here to separate legal exposure from reputational narrative, which I think is the right instinct for a topic like this. Chapters 26–28 cover public feuds, a broader cultural shift in how Musk is perceived, and an unusually personal chapter on estrangement from his daughter.

The book closes with chapter 29 directly asking the question it's been building toward — “necessary evil or civilizational liability” — before chapter 30 ends, fittingly, at a Texas launch site with an eye toward Mars. It's a big swing for an ending, and whether it lands probably depends on how convinced you were by the thesis back in chapter 1.
