# Why Your AI Draft Sounds Like Everyone Else's (And How to Fix It)
If you've spent any time reading AI-generated content, you've probably noticed the tells: the tidy three-part lists, the "In today's fast-paced world" openers, the relentless positivity. It's not that the writing is bad — it's that it's generic. Every draft sounds like it came from the same anonymous committee.
The good news is this isn't a limitation of the tool. It's a limitation of the prompt.
## Why Sameness Happens
Language models are trained to produce the statistically likely next word. Left with a vague instruction — "write a blog post about productivity" — the model reaches for the most common patterns in its training data. Those patterns are, by definition, unoriginal. You're getting the average of a thousand blog posts, not the voice of one specific writer.
## Give It a Point of View
The fastest fix is specificity. Instead of asking for "a post about cipher-solving tips," try: "Write for someone who's solved a few easy ciphers but keeps getting stuck on transposition — assume they're frustrated, not a beginner, and skip the encouragement filler." That single sentence eliminates half the generic phrasing before the model writes a word.
## Feed It Real Examples
Models imitate what they're shown. Paste in two or three paragraphs you've actually written — even unrelated to the topic — and ask the model to match that rhythm and vocabulary. This works far better than describing your voice abstractly ("make it punchy and conversational"), because "punchy" means something different to every model and every reader.
## Cut the Hedges in Revision
AI drafts tend to over-qualify: "it's important to note," "in many cases," "generally speaking." These phrases pad word count without adding meaning. A quick pass to delete hedging language usually tightens a post by 10–15% and makes it read like it was written by someone with an actual opinion.
## Treat the First Draft as a Skeleton
The most reliable technique isn't a better prompt — it's a better workflow. Let the model generate structure and a rough draft, then rewrite the opening and closing paragraphs yourself. Readers form their impression of "does this sound human" in the first three sentences and the last two. Spending your own editing time there, rather than evenly across the whole piece, gets you most of the benefit for a fraction of the effort.
Generic AI writing is a solvable problem, not an inherent one. The tool reflects the constraints you give it — the more specific those constraints, the less it sounds like everyone else's draft.
